Kiryandongo, Uganda: The Paluo-Chope Cultural Institution has rolled out an educational bursary program to support academically gifted but financially disadvantaged learners in Kiryandongo District.
His Royal Highness Odong David Atenyi (Dabandal), the Royal Leader of Paluo-Chope, unveiled the initiative during a community meeting in Bunyama Village, Kyankende Sub-county. He said the bursary is designed to ensure that no learner is denied education because of financial hardship.
The scheme is being spearheaded by Mr. Opio Fred Amooti Dachwa, the Minister of Education and officer in charge of the program, in partnership with 18 schools and universities. He noted that many teenagers in Kiryandongo have missed out on education due to lack of support, fueling illiteracy and limiting opportunities for self-reliance.
“The bursary will provide opportunities for learners to enroll in primary schools and pursue medical courses at universities,” Mr. Opio explained, stressing that the program will strictly consider merit, academic performance, and proven potential.
He assured the community that the application process will be transparent and fair, with no discrimination based on religion or clan.
Local leaders and parents hailed the bursary as a timely intervention, particularly for families dependent on subsistence farming. “As a peasant farmer, our income is seasonal and unpredictable, making it hard to pay school fees or tuition, especially for medical courses,” Abdul, a parent, said.
His Royal Highness Atenyi called on families, educators, stakeholders, and partners to collaborate in identifying eligible beneficiaries and championing education as a pathway to development in the district.
