Jinja, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni on Friday commissioned the Kiira Vehicle Plant, Africa’s largest and most advanced bus manufacturing facility, positioning Uganda as a continental leader in e-mobility innovation, industrialization, and sustainable transport solutions.

The commissioning marked the culmination of a 14-year journey that began on November 24, 2011, when Makerere University unveiled the Kiira EV, Africa’s first electric vehicle. The new plant is now a flagship industrial project set to drive job creation, reduce import dependence, and accelerate Uganda’s transition toward clean mobility.

Situated in Jinja Industrial Park, the Kiira Vehicle Plant boasts state-of-the-art workshops, including a Body Shop, Paint Shop, Chassis Systems Shop, Trim & Assembly Shop, Quality Inspection & Testing Shop, and a dedicated Test Track.

The facility is supported by a design and engineering center that enhances its capacity to manufacture world-class vehicles and drive Uganda’s local content strategy.

Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza, described the development as a transformative milestone in Uganda’s industrial journey.

“We witness what was once a far-off dream realized as the biggest, most competent, and most capable bus manufacturing plant on the continent,” she said. “With this plant, Uganda is equipped to meet the growing demand for mobility solutions both at home and across Africa.”

While Uganda spends an estimated $800 million annually on vehicle imports, the Kiira Vehicle Plant is projected to save a significant portion of that expenditure by becoming a regional source of electric buses and coaches.

The plant is expected to generate more than 14,000 jobs along the mobility industry value chain, with a target of achieving 65% local content. KMC plans to progressively source materials and production parts from Ugandan suppliers, stimulating economic growth and reviving Jinja’s historic status as the nation’s industrial hub.

Green transport for Africa

Kiira Motors’ flagship products include the Kayoola EVS electric city bus and Kayoola coaches, designed for African road conditions and equipped with passenger-friendly features such as Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, and real-time route updates.

The Kayoola EVS contributes directly to Uganda’s 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Emissions target, reinforcing government commitment to environmental stewardship and green innovation.

With an initial installed capacity of 2,500 vehicles per year, the plant targets medium-term expansion to 10,000 vehicles annually. Plans are already underway to diversify production, including the development of Uganda’s first hybrid SUV.

The Kiira Vehicle Plant is being hailed as more than just a factory—it is a national symbol of indigenous innovation, resilience, and Uganda’s readiness to lead Africa’s green industrial revolution.
