Kamuli, Uganda: The International Development Institute (IDI) Uganda has injected UGX 72 million into Early Childhood Development (ECD) education with the handover of two new nursery learning centres in Kamuli District.
The centres, established at Bukusu and Bukulube Primary Schools in Nawanyago Sub-county, Buzaaya County, were officially handed over on Friday by IDI Uganda Country Director, Chanwook Park. He urged district leaders, parents, and the community to ensure the sustainability of the facilities and encourage children to enroll.
“On behalf of IDI Uganda and our Korean donors, I want to say these facilities are now owned by the community. I encourage you to cooperate for the sustainable development of these villages,” Park said.
He emphasized the critical role of early childhood education in shaping long-term academic success, noting that nursery learning provides the firm foundation for children’s future.

Christine Okalang, the Regional Program Manager, highlighted IDI’s broader education support, including the provision of 330 million lunch meals this term to 6,545 pupils across 16 primary schools under the institute’s flagship feeding program.
“We have invested in teacher refresher training, infrastructure, water and sanitation, and the school feeding project. These interventions are attracting enrollment, retention, and improved performance,” Okalang said.

Stella Lubuga, Headteacher of Bukusu Primary School, applauded IDI for boosting nursery education, noting that while government policy requires every primary school to have an ECD section, resources remain a challenge.
“Your generosity, expertise, and commitment to supporting education will leave a lasting legacy in our schools,” Lubuga said.
The initiative is part of IDI Uganda’s continued partnership with the government and communities to enhance the quality of education through infrastructure, teacher support, and feeding programs.
