Umukuka urges learners to embrace HIV testing, reject abuse

Steven Masiga, spokesperson of the Bamasaaba Cultural Institution, addressing learners of Nkoma SSS in Mbale City on HIV awareness and cultural values.

Mbale, Uganda: His Highness the Umukuka III, Jude Mike Mudoma, has urged school learners across Masaabaland to voluntarily test for HIV in support of the Uganda AIDS Commission’s mission of achieving a population free of AIDS by 2030.

The call was delivered on Monday by Steven Masiga, spokesperson of the Bamasaaba Cultural Institution, while giving a cultural talk at Nkoma Secondary School in Mbale City.

Masiga advised learners to reject advances from men preying on them for sex and to immediately report such cases to the Umukuka’s office for onward reporting to the police.

“We shall not negotiate with criminals suspected of defilement or rape. We recommend heavy punishments for perpetrators, not negotiation,” Masiga stressed.

He also cautioned students against negative habits that undermine academic progress, including drug abuse and the formation of criminal gangs, urging instead the creation of “academic gangs” for debating and learning purposes.

During the visit, the Bamasaaba cultural leadership applauded Nkoma SSS management for procuring a new school bus and commended the UPDF Engineering Brigade for constructing new buildings at the institution.

Masiga further revealed that the Umukuka will continue awarding annual scholarships to bright and needy learners across the region.

The cultural delegation, accompanied by media representatives, was received by the Deputy Headmistress of Nkoma SSS, Madam Aisa Kauma. Nkoma SSS is a Muslim-founded school located near Pallisa Road, a few meters from the Industrial Division offices in Mbale City.
