Kamuli, Uganda: An 80-year-old blind woman narrowly escaped death after heavy rains accompanied by strong winds washed away her house in Bugobi Zone, Busanda Parish, Bugulumbya Sub-county, Kamuli District.
Tibairwamu Lovisa Namwebya, who lived in the house with her grandchildren, was trapped inside when the storm struck on Sunday evening. Residents led by Wabiki Daniel rushed to her rescue and managed to pull her and the children from the debris.
They are currently nursing minor wounds.
“She survived with minor injuries. We managed to rescue her and the grandchildren. But she is now homeless, and I call upon everyone to come to her aid,” Wabiki said.
Namwebya’s relative, Namuganza Rebecca, explained that they had gone for a burial, leaving her at home with the children. “When we returned, we found the house dismantled. We ask the government and well-wishers to come in and support her since she has nowhere to sleep,” she pleaded.
Former female councillor of Busanda Parish, Yoyeta Doreen, also confirmed the incident and called on Good Samaritans to extend assistance to the elderly woman and her family.
