FULL LIST: Bagala, Ssewanyana, Ssegona dropped as NUP unveils 2026 flagbearers

NUP MPs Joyce Bagala, Allan Ssewanyana, and Medard Ssegona who have been dropped from the party’s 2026 parliamentary flagbearer list.

Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) Election Management Committee has released the official list of parliamentary flagbearers for the 2026 general elections, dropping several incumbent Members of Parliament in a surprise reshuffle.

The list, published on the party’s official platforms, confirms candidates who will represent NUP in constituencies across the country.

Among the big names missing are Medard Ssegona (Busiro East), Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye West), Joyce Bagala (Mityana Woman), Francis Katongole Katabazi (Kalungu East), Paul Nsubuga (Busiro North), Fred Ssimbwa (Nakifuma), Aloysius Mukasa (Rubaga South), and Derrick Nyeko (Makindye East).

Bagala, a key voice in NUP’s parliamentary caucus, has been replaced by Prossy Mukisa as the party’s flagbearer for the Mityana Woman MP seat. In Makindye West, Allan Ssewanyana lost his slot to KCCA Speaker Zahara Luyirika, while Shamim Malende retained her position as Kampala Woman MP candidate.

In Busiro East, Medard Ssegona was replaced by Kadongokamu singer-turned-politician Sir Mathias Walukagga. Meanwhile, Rubaga South MP Aloysius Mukasa lost his place to Nassolo Eugenia, who emerged victorious in the internal party selection.

Party officials said the changes followed a fresh vetting exercise designed to boost grassroots support and front candidates they believe can deliver stronger performances in 2026.

The exclusions, widely described by analysts as Kavule’s latest purge, signal a major strategic shift within NUP’s parliamentary lineup ahead of the 2026 race.
