Eastern Uganda: The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) yesterday released the official list of parliamentary candidates who will contest under its banner in the 2026 general elections for Eastern Uganda, delivering major surprises across the region.

In Busoga, several notable changes marked a dramatic reshuffle; Easter Manjeri Kyebakutika, the incumbent MP and only NUP woman MP from Jinja City, was dropped in favour of Sarah Lwansasula, while Iganga Mayor Bamu Lulenzi lost to veteran politician Abed Nasser Mudiobole, who emerged as the party’s candidate for Iganga Municipal MP.

In Jinja, the NUP flag has shifted in several constituencies following party realignments. Isabirye David Aga, the incumbent MP for Jinja Northern Division, who recently joined NUP from FDC, was denied the flag, which was instead awarded to comedian Hussein Muyonjo, popularly known as Swengere.

Dr. Timothy Batuwa Lusala, also a recent FDC defector, retained his position as the NUP candidate for Jinja Southern Division West, alongside Paul Mwiru, who will also contest under the party flag in the same constituency.

The announcements underscored a strategic recalibration within NUP as it prepares for the 2026 parliamentary elections, reflecting a balance between veteran politicians, emerging leaders, and party loyalists across Eastern Uganda.
