Kibuku, Uganda: Two people have been confirmed dead in a tragic accident involving a Toyota Land Cruiser in Kibuku District. The crash occurred on Tuesday, September 30, at around 5:00 PM when the vehicle, registration number UAS 980N, driven by Musisi Eriya, was traveling from Mbale towards Kampala.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident unfolded near Saala trading centre when a three-year-old girl, Alutugume Mwesigwa of Nampiido village, suddenly ran onto the road. In an attempt to avoid hitting the child, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off and fatally struck two pedestrians.
The victims were identified as Alutugume Mwesigwa and Kigenyi Arafat, 37, a resident of Nakisenye village in Kirika Sub-County. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police officers led by Head Constable Eriebu Moses and Sergeant Wasalaine Tom swiftly responded, preventing further damage to the vehicle and dispersing a group of rowdy youths who attempted to loot property from the crash scene.
Witnesses condemned the youths’ behavior after they attacked a bystander who was taking photos, biting him before he was rescued by a bodaboda rider.
ASP Kyempasa Wilfred, the Bukedi North Police spokesperson, confirmed that the vehicle was towed to Tirinyi Police Station for inspection and that the driver, Musisi Eriya, is in custody as investigations continue. He added that police forms PF 48A and PF 48C have been filled out in line with accident procedures.
“The loss of such young lives is heartbreaking. We appeal to drivers and the community to exercise utmost caution to prevent similar tragedies,” ASP Kyempasa said.
The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their families pending postmortem examinations. A sketch plan of the scene has also been drawn as part of the ongoing inquiries.
