Masaka, Uganda: Victims and complainants Tuesday protested the decision by the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Masaka to grant bail to Lwengo District Chairperson Ibrahim Kitatta, who is facing charges of attempted murder and robbery linked to the July 14, 2025, NRM primaries.
Kitatta appeared before Chief Magistrate Simon Ntoroko and pleaded not guilty to four counts, including the attempted murder of David Ssebuguzi, LC1 chairperson of Kanakulya Zone, robbing him of a mobile phone, stealing Shs900,000 from Musa Kataze, and robbing Liyaada Nakanwagi of her mobile phone.
Despite objections from State Prosecutor Mariam Njuki, who argued that Kitatta could interfere with witnesses and evidence, Magistrate Ntoroko ruled in his favour, noting that the accused was a public official with a permanent residence and credible sureties.
Kitatta was granted cash bail of Shs1 million, while his sureties, Lwengo District Vice Chairperson Vincent Birimuye, District Speaker Peregrino Ssenozi, and Kinoni Town Council Clerk Abdul Musa Mpagi, were each bonded at Shs10 million non-cash.
Outside the court, complainants expressed outrage over the ruling, saying their lives remain in danger due to continued threats. “We are not safe. Allowing him out on bail only increases our fear,” one of the victims said.
Magistrate Ntoroko urged the state to expedite the case to ensure timely justice. The case has been adjourned to November 20, 2025.
