Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM) has vowed to challenge the Electoral Commission (EC) in the High Court over the alleged denial of its presidential flagbearer, Dr. Keddi Eric Steven Zuluba, during the recently concluded 2026 presidential nominations.
Addressing the press following Thursday’s verdict from the commission, Dr. Keddi revealed that the UPM legal team intends to file a court petition, claiming that the nominations were marred by irregularities.
The Electoral Commission, chaired by Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, nominated eight candidates on September 23 and 24 to contest the 2026 presidential elections. The list includes President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM), Robert Kasibante (NPP), Joseph Mabirizi (CP), Nandala Mafabi (FDC), Gen. Mugisha Muntu (ANT), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (NUP), Munyagwa Mubarak Sserunga (CMP), and Frank Kabinga Bulira (RPP).
Dr. Keddi alleges that several irregularities by the EC led to unfair nominations that barred him and other hopefuls from participating. He specifically cited actions by security personnel at the nomination center, which he says were deliberate and coordinated by the commission to block his entry.
“I arrived at Lweza at 3:50 pm with my assessment form and after paying the Shs20 million nomination fee, but I was denied access at the final security gate. The officers claimed they had no confirmation of my clearance. While clearing Frank Kabinga of RPP, they delayed me and by 5 pm, I was told nominations had officially closed,” Dr. Keddi explained.
Dr. Keddi is seeking a court declaration that the EC’s actions were unlawful, infringing on principles of good governance, transparency, and his fundamental electoral rights. He is also requesting an order compelling the commission to nominate him as a presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections.
