Arua, Uganda: The Territorial Police in West Nile is on a manhunt for a gang of armed robbers who staged a daring daylight heist and made off with UGX 250 million from a gold dealer in Ovisoni Trading Center, Vuura Sub-county, Arua District.
According to West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Jimmy Anguyo Baiga, the robbery occurred at around 5:00 PM on September 27, 2025, when the businessman, who had just completed a lucrative gold transaction, was ambushed by masked assailants believed to have been trailing him.
Witnesses described the attack as swift and violent, with the victim overpowered before being stripped of his cash in full public view. The robbers then fled the scene on a motorcycle without license plates, heading toward a remote village route.
“Upon receiving intelligence, officers from Arua Rural Police Station, supported by Arua City units, responded immediately but found the suspects had already escaped,” SP Anguyo said, noting that the poor state of roads in the area gave the criminals an advantage during pursuit.
He added that police tactical teams are now combing the scene and nearby villages for forensic clues, including possible CCTV footage and eyewitness descriptions of the suspects.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among traders and residents in West Nile, with police issuing a strong advisory against transporting large sums of money without security escort or electronic alternatives.
SP Anguyo reaffirmed that detectives are working around the clock to bring the culprits to justice. “Our investigation is active, and we shall not relent until those behind this violent act are apprehended,” he said.
