Kampala, Uganda: Victoria University’s sports dominance has hit a new peak after the Victoria Sharks stormed through the National 7s Qualifiers unbeaten at Ruga Ruga Grounds in Busukuma–Gayaza, securing core-team status in the Nile Special 7s Series and cementing their place among Uganda’s top rugby sides.
The Sharks delivered clinical performances throughout the tournament, sweeping aside the Mbale Elephants, Buddu Bears, Lira Bulls and producing a commanding semifinal display to eliminate the Njeru Hurricanes.
The victory marks a historic breakthrough for Victoria University sports, coming just a year after the Sharks fell agonisingly short against the Kampani Eagles.
This year, the team returned sharper, hungrier and united — finally earning their shot in Uganda’s elite rugby competition.
Tumukunde Wins Gold for Uganda in Ghana
The rugby triumph capped what has been a remarkable week for Victoria University. Earlier, weightlifter Dan Tumukunde, a student at VU, clinched gold at the 2025 African Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championship in Accra, Ghana.

Tumukunde posted an outstanding performance, lifting 90kg (snatch), 120kg (clean & jerk), Total: 210kg, earning Best Overall Total and Gold Champion (110+kg).
Celebrating the achievement, Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr Lawrence Muganga wrote:
“We don’t just teach excellence — we lift it!”
Makerere Impis Fall Short at Knockout Stage
Elsewhere, the Makerere Impis, who also advanced from their group undefeated after strong wins over the KIU Crows and Kitgum Lions, faltered in the knockout phase. Their semifinal clash against the Mbale Elephants ended 12–07, ending their hopes of making the core league.
The Sharks now join the Elephants in the prestigious Nile Special 7s Series, setting up a new wave of thrilling competition on the national stage.
With a rugby title and a continental gold medal secured in the same week, Victoria University has reaffirmed its fast-growing reputation as a powerhouse in both sports and academia.
