Gulu City, Uganda: A powerful political wave is sweeping through Northern Uganda as youths under the Gulu City Ghetto Youths banner have launched a full-scale mobilisation campaign to rally support for President Yoweri Museveni and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ahead of the upcoming elections.
The movement, which includes both male and female youths—among them single mothers once aligned with Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP)—has vowed to “leave no stone unturned” in ensuring NRM dominance across all elective positions in the Acholi sub-region.
At the forefront of this campaign is Bosco Lawin, famously known as Snoop Dog, who has earned the nickname “The Ghetto Gladiator”. Once a close ally of Bobi Wine, Lawin defected to the NRM in 2021 alongside more than 600 youths.
Addressing members in Gulu City, Lawin revealed that he has been carrying out “underground mobilisation” across Northern Uganda to better understand the challenges facing ghetto youths.
“Only the NRM government has the capacity to change the lives of ghetto youths,” he said. “Opposition misinformation has misled youths into decisions that hurt their livelihoods. Peace under President Museveni has allowed development to reach us — and we must protect it.”
He urged young people to embrace government skilling programs and work collectively for empowerment, stressing that organisation makes it easier to benefit from state initiatives.
Okello Patrick Oryema, an NRM hopeful for the Nwoya LCV seat, applauded the mobilisation drive but cautioned that skilling programs must be matched with capital investment to make a lasting impact.
“We must reassess past interventions and ensure they yield real results. Youths should register to vote — that is the only way to secure your future,” he said.
Adongping Catherine, alias Min Obama and Patron of Ghetto Mothers, underscored the need to train young mothers rather than merely offering them handouts. She accused some government agencies of favouritism, alleging that aid distribution often prioritises Central Uganda over the North.
Hanifa Haruna, Chairperson of Ghetto Mothers, pledged to traverse the region mobilising support for Museveni, saying the movement gives young mothers a united voice in national politics.
Watson James, Secretary of Gulu City Ghetto Youths, revealed that the group has coined the term “Musevenomics” to describe their belief in the President’s economic approach as the surest path to prosperity.
The Gulu structure forms part of the larger WALK Ghetto Youths Movement, which spans the West Nile, Acholi, Lango, and Karamoja subregions.
President Museveni is expected in Gulu City on October 21, 2025, as part of his regional campaign tour. The youths say preparations are underway to give him a grand reception, celebrating “the man who gave peace to Northern Uganda.”
As the political season heats up, observers say this surge of youth mobilisation could redefine the balance of power in Northern Uganda — marking the beginning of a fierce battle for the ghetto vote.
