Mystery as two NUP youth leaders die under similar circumstances

Mukono, Uganda: Tension and grief have gripped the National Unity Platform (NUP) fraternity in Mukono District following the mysterious death of Racheal Nakamanya, a rising youth leader who had recently secured the party ticket for the Mukono District Woman Councillorship seat.

The circumstances surrounding Nakamanya’s sudden death remain unclear, prompting widespread concern among party members and calls for a swift and transparent investigation by authorities.

Nakamanya, described by colleagues as an energetic mobilizer and passionate advocate for community development, was serving her first term as Goma Division Youth Councillor, a position she assumed through a by-election after the tragic death of her predecessor.

A Troubling Pattern

The latest tragedy has revived painful memories within NUP circles, as Nakamanya’s predecessor, the late Shallon Mubuuke, also died mysteriously under similar circumstances shortly before she was sworn in on the same party ticket.

The eerie repetition, two young women leaders from the same area, same political party, and same office has sent shockwaves through Mukono’s political community, fueling speculation and unease among residents and supporters.

NUP leaders have expressed sorrow and demanded a full probe into what they describe as a disturbing pattern targeting emerging youth leaders within the opposition. “We are deeply troubled and demand accountability. Two vibrant young women, both promising leaders, cannot die under similar unclear circumstances without answers,” said a senior NUP youth mobilizer who preferred anonymity.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway to establish the cause of Nakamanya’s death, while preparations are ongoing for her burial at her ancestral home in Masaka District.

Supporters have urged police to treat the matter with urgency and transparency, warning that continued silence could deepen public mistrust in local political processes.
