Jinja, Uganda: Jinja North Member of Parliament, Hon. Isabirye David Aga Mutubu, has reaffirmed his support for comedian-turned-politician Hussein Muyonjo, popularly known as Swengere, as the official National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for the 2026 general elections.

Hon. Isabirye, who joined NUP recently after previously serving under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), dismissed as false the widespread rumours suggesting he had joined the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) or intended to contest as an independent candidate after losing the NUP party ticket.

Speaking during NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine)’s campaign rally in Namayingo District on Saturday, Isabirye made his position clear, pledging full allegiance to the party and its chosen candidate.

“There’s a poster circulating online with a symbol of another political party claiming I’m contesting. I want to make it clear that I’m not going to contest. I fully support Swengere, who rightfully won the party flag. What is circulating is false and should be treated with contempt. I remain a loyal member of NUP,” said Hon. Isabirye.

He explained that NUP’s internal vetting committee had selected Swengere as the flag bearer for Jinja North after a transparent process and emphasized that all party members were obliged to support the winner in line with party guidelines.

Swengere Praises Isabirye’s “Maturity and Obedience”

Reacting to the development, Swengere lauded Hon. Isabirye for demonstrating maturity and respect for party discipline, describing his decision as “a challenge to many political leaders.” “I want to thank my brother, Isabirye David Aga, for the courage he has shown by standing with the party’s choice. He has set a good example that many of us should emulate,” Swengere said.

He further urged the people of Jinja North to unite behind NUP’s vision ahead of the 2026 elections, saying his leadership will reflect “the people’s will and not personal ambition.”

Swengere called on voters to turn up in large numbers for what he termed “protest voting”, meant to reclaim the people’s voice through the ballot. “Victory cannot come from one person alone; it must be a collective effort. Let’s work together for change,” he said.
