Entebbe, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met His Highness the Paramount Chief of Lango (Won Nyaci), Eng. Dr. Moses Odongo Okune and other leaders from the Lango sub-region over the weekend for a discussion on various cultural practices, land management, education, and wealth creation.
During the meeting, Mr Museveni called for a review of certain cultural norms, while preserving traditions deemed vital. He specifically highlighted that the practice of keeping the girl child dependent throughout her life should be revised, whereas marriage outside one’s clan should continue.
“We discussed various issues and agreed that some cultural practices should be reviewed, while others should be maintained or improved. For instance, the tradition of the girl child being dependent on others throughout her life needs revision, while the practice of not marrying within one’s clan should be preserved,” Museveni said.

The President advised local leaders to fence their land, adopt irrigation, use fertilisers, improve education, and preserve the local language. “I also advised them to fence their land, consider irrigation, use fertilisers, improve education, and lead in the preservation of the local language.”
He also emphasised the importance of teaching people “how to generate wealth (‘lonyo’) through preaching and leading by example, as well as maintaining peace by opposing troublemakers.”
Mr Museveni also discussed “the reclamation of administrative centers by cultural institutions and stressed the need to combat land fragmentation,” encouraging leaders to spearhead these initiatives at the community level.
The meeting comes just days after President Museveni’s visit to the Lango sub-region as part of his ongoing 2026 election campaign trail. Analysts now argue that the dialogue with cultural leaders is aimed at reinforcing NRM’s local support in the war-torn region while highlighting the President’s developmental and peace-building agenda.
