Kamuli, Uganda: The Butansi Elders Forum has secured two acres of land to establish a modern secondary school in Nabirama, Kamuli District, a landmark step aimed at transforming education access and safeguarding the future of the girl child in the sub-county.

The land, situated adjacent to Nabirama Health Centre and Primary School, was personally donated by elder and businessman Mr. Kezekia Wagubi, who described the gesture as part of his commitment to giving back to the community that shaped him.

“God has blessed me from a humble beginning to becoming a successful businessman,” Wagubi said during the handover ceremony. “What pains me is seeing our children’s enthusiasm to study being shattered by long distances. Girls face even greater risks. It is a blessing that Butansi Elders Forum has the right vision and merits my contribution of land.”

He clarified that the donated land was his personal property, not inherited, and was given as a willful act of community development — much like his grandfather, who donated land for the local church.

A Vision for Accessible Education

Mr. Wagubi emphasized that the proposed school will bring security and opportunity closer to learners, especially girls, who currently trek over 13 kilometers to reach the nearest secondary school.

He added that having a nearby school will not only boost academic performance but also inspire parents to value education and keep their daughters in class.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Henry Dhikusooka Munaaba, the Forum’s Secretary for Cooperation and Foreign Affairs in Bugabula Chiefdom, said the project reflects the elders’ shared vision to make Butansi a model sub-county for education and development.

“In line with our motto ‘Butansi First and Fast,’ we are channeling our efforts toward securing the future of learners, promoting education, and protecting girls from predators,” Dhikusooka said. “Let us leave petty issues aside and focus on service delivery beginning with education and household income improvement.”

Dhikusooka noted that the upcoming school will offer both academic and vocational training, equipping learners with portable, practical skills and a strong moral foundation to become productive citizens.

Unity Over Politics

Forum Chairperson Pastor Andrew Muwanguzi stressed that the Butansi Elders Forum is non-partisan and purely focused on development. “We are here for one purpose — to unite all sons and daughters of Butansi and harness our resources and abilities to make our sub-county a model of progress,” Muwanguzi said.

Representing the local community, Ms. Monica Mukasa hailed the initiative as a turning point for education in Butansi. “This school will not only bring income and security but will also help girls re-enroll and complete their education,” she said. “It is a symbol of unity and a proud payback from the people of Butansi.”
