‘Sseggona can’t win against Walukagga’ -Gashumba weighs in on Busiro East race

Frank Gashumba (L) has advised Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Sseggona (R) to abandon his independent bid against NUP’s Mathias Walukagga, predicting a heavy defeat in 2026.

Wakiso, Uganda: Outspoken political analyst and media critic Frank Gashumba has warned that Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Sseggona stands no chance of reclaiming his parliamentary seat after losing the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag to musician-turned-politician Mathias Walukagga.

Sseggona, a seasoned legislator and prominent lawyer, recently lost the NUP ticket in a tense party primary and announced that he would contest as an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections. His decision has sparked heated debate among supporters, political observers, and party loyalists, many of whom have questioned his political future.

Speaking out on the matter, Gashumba dismissed Sseggona’s chances in the forthcoming polls, describing his move as a political miscalculation that will likely end in defeat.

“I am very lucky because I live among different people. I understand that Medard Sseggona can never win this election against Walukagga. He should step aside and focus on other things because he won’t make it back to Parliament,” Gashumba said.

According to Gashumba, the former Shadow Minister for Justice has lost significant grassroots support in Busiro East, while Walukagga, popularly known for his Kadongo Kamu music and recent rise in local politics, enjoys overwhelming popularity on the ground.

Sseggona’s defiance of the NUP party decision is also touted as something that could further isolate him from his core base, weakening his chances in an already competitive race.
