Govt injects Shs1.7bn into Apac health facilities upgrade

Apac, Uganda: Government has released Shs 900 million for the construction of two storage blocks to support staff quarters at Apac General Hospital and an additional Shs 800 million for a new theatre unit at Akokoro Health Centre IV.

Apac District LC5 Chairperson Mr Odongo Asante announced the development during a press briefing on Wednesday, October 08, saying the allocations mark the first phase of a larger Shs 30 billion rehabilitation request submitted by the district for Apac Hospital.

“We had requested for Shs 30 billion to overhaul the entire hospital. This Shs 900 million is a first installment to kickstart that process,” Mr. Asante said. “The funds will go into building a modern storage unit essential for staff quarters. It’s not enough, but it’s a firm start.”

He confirmed that the UPDF Engineering Brigade has been deployed to start work at both sites — a move the district says ensures discipline, efficiency, and quality delivery of public infrastructure.

“We chose UPDF because of their discipline and proven capacity to deliver quality public works within deadlines,” Asante explained.

While welcoming the funding, district leaders called for strong transparency and active public participation in monitoring the projects. Mr Sam Opira, the District Secretary for Education and Health, urged residents to take an active role in oversight.

“This is public money. Communities must monitor materials and demand quality work. Transparency must be our guiding principle,” Opira said, warning that laxity could result in substandard construction or mismanagement.

Mr. Adoko Moses, LC5 Councilor for Agulu Division, issued a stern warning against theft and sabotage, calling on locals to protect the building materials like their own property. “Guard the cement. Watch the iron sheets. These buildings are for your children and your community. If we lose them to theft, we have only ourselves to blame,” Adoko said.

He added that any leaders or residents caught aiding theft or collusion with contractors would face disciplinary and legal action.

The new funding brings relief to Apac Hospital, which serves as a major referral facility for several sub-counties but has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure and limited staff accommodation.

The theatre unit at Akokoro HCIV is expected to reduce congestion at the main hospital and improve emergency surgical response, particularly for maternal and accident cases.

DailyExpress understands that construction is set to begin within the month under UPDF supervision, with leaders pledging routine inspections and public progress updates to promote accountability.

“This is your hospital. This is your future. Do not let it be stolen. Do not let it be wasted. Get involved. Stay informed. Protect what belongs to you,” Adoko urged.
