One dead, two injured in tragic Kumi–Pallisa road crash

Pallisa, Uganda: One person has died on the spot while two others sustained serious injuries following a tragic road accident along the Kumi–Pallisa highway on Friday morning.

The 11:30 a.m. crash occurred near Okutai Village and involved a white Toyota Land Cruiser registration number UAY 702Y and a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle registration number UMA 481AN.

According to Pallisa Police, the Land Cruiser was being driven by Marijan Faruq, 45, a driver with Germany Cooperation and resident of Nakatunya, Soroti City. The motorcycle was being ridden by Mpyangu Abdu Karim, 20, a salesman from Kalalaka “B” in Pallisa Town Council.

Mpyangu was carrying two passengers identified as Diogo Sadat, 17, and Charles Mateeka, 26, both salesmen from Lweta “C” in Pallisa Town Council.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the motorcycle rider, who was approaching from the opposite direction, attempted to swerve to avoid a head-on collision but crossed into the Land Cruiser’s lane, hitting its rear left side. The impact threw the rider and his passengers off the motorcycle, killing the rider instantly and injuring the two passengers.

“Emergency services quickly responded to the scene. The Officer in Charge of Traffic for Pallisa, IP Chekwoti Immaculate, and her team conducted an assessment and drew a sketch plan for further investigation,” confirmed ASP Kyempasa Wilfred, the Bukedi North Police spokesperson.

He added that the injured victims were rushed to Pallisa General Hospital for treatment, while the deceased’s body was conveyed to Pallisa Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
