Fort Portal, Uganda: The President of the Uganda Orthopaedic Officers Association (UOOA), Dr. Owen Bwambale, 31, has tragically died following a road accident along Lugard Road in Fort Portal Tourism City on Saturday afternoon, leaving the medical community and residents in shock.

According to the Rwenzori West Police Spokesperson, Vincent Twesige, the fatal crash occurred at around 3:15 p.m. when a white Isuzu Forward truck, registration number UAY 381P, travelling from Kasese toward Fort Portal Town, lost control and knocked Dr. Bwambale, who was walking along the roadside near the Joint Medical Stores Building.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck suddenly veered off the road, hitting Dr. Bwambale with great force.

He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Buhinga Hospital (Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital), where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene and remains unidentified. Officers have since visited the scene, documented evidence, and impounded the truck, which is currently parked at Fort Portal Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Twesigye said investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.

Dr. Bwambale was instrumental in advancing orthopedic healthcare and professional development among Uganda’s medical practitioners. Under his leadership, the association had intensified advocacy for improved medical logistics and rural health infrastructure.

Residents and colleagues described Dr. Bwambale as a compassionate professional who served his patients with exceptional dedication and integrity.

His death has left a profound void in the medical fraternity and among the people of Rwengoma, where he lived and worked.
