Chicago, USA: Uganda’s long-distance sensation Jacob Kiplimo etched his name into global athletics history after clinching victory at the 2025 Chicago Marathon on Sunday, becoming the first Ugandan ever to win a World Marathon Major.
Kiplimo clocked an astonishing 2:02:23 to claim the title in only his second marathon outing, following his impressive debut in London earlier this year, where he finished second.
Kenya’s Amos Kipruto and Alex Masai came in second and third, clocking 2:03:54 and 2:04:37, respectively.
The half-marathon world record holder stamped his dominance after breaking away at the 30-kilometer mark, steadily building a commanding lead of nearly one minute with five miles to go.
Kiplimo, who appeared composed and in control, glanced back occasionally in the closing stages but had little to worry about as he cruised alone through the final stretch.
Exhausted but triumphant, he collapsed to the ground moments after crossing the finish line, marking a historic day for Ugandan athletics.
