Katakwi, Uganda: Katakwi District has confirmed a smooth start to the 2025 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations, with 875 candidates sitting Geography Paper One on Monday, October 13, under tight security and coordinated supervision across all centres.

According to Joseph Opule, Headteacher of Katakwi High School and Chief Invigilator for Usuk County and Katakwi Town Council, all examination materials were delivered on time, and no major disruptions were recorded.

“All schools and examination centres maintained proper conduct among students and invigilators. We trained personnel to handle exam procedures in line with UNEB guidelines,” Opule said, urging candidates to remain confident throughout the examination period.

At Onset Senior Secondary School, Headteacher Isaac Otukei emphasized discipline and focus among candidates, saying the school registered 87 candidates — 47 boys and 40 girls — and is determined to post excellent results.

“As a private school in Katakwi, we’re targeting higher marks in these ongoing exams,” Otukei said.

James Opio, Headteacher of Kapujan Community SS and Chief Supervisor for Toroma County, also confirmed smooth progress, citing discipline and cooperation between students and invigilators.

Meanwhile, Peter Anguria, in charge of Ngariam County and Headteacher of Ngariam Seed SS, reported that despite localized flooding, examination materials were successfully delivered and exams started on schedule.

John Stephen Engole, Chairperson of Katakwi District Headteachers Association, commended the district’s overall preparedness, confirming that 875 candidates registered this year compared to 753 last year — an increase of over 150 candidates.

“We have not registered any problems so far, only success. UNEB and the district have deployed measures to monitor and support candidates during the examinations,” Engole said.

He appealed to schools, parents, invigilators, and security officers to maintain vigilance and protect the integrity of the exams, conducted under the theme “Embracing Security and Holistic Assessment of Learners in a Dynamic Environment.”

Nationally, UNEB confirmed that 432,159 Senior Four candidates have officially begun their UCE examinations, a 12.1% increase from last year’s 379,748 candidates.
