Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), on Wednesday presided over the closing session of the 19th Ministerial Meeting of the NAM Coordinating Bureau at Speke Resort Munyonyo, emphasizing Africa’s growing role as the world’s new centre of hope.

The meeting, held under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” attracted delegates from 121 member states and reaffirmed NAM’s commitment to promoting mutual development through trade, technology, and investment partnerships.

President Museveni hailed the founding fathers of the Movement for building a strong anti-hegemonic foundation that continues to inspire developing nations in the struggle against global dominance and exploitation.

“I wish to salute the founding fathers of the Non-Aligned Movement, who gave us a solid start in the fight against the influence of hegemony that emerged in the 1940s. Indeed, this failed approach to shared global prosperity was challenged in history (Catholicism in Europe, Metternich in Austria-Hungary, not to mention those who tried and succeeded temporarily in colonising us, only for it to end badly for them).”

“I feel strongly, as a third-generation anti-colonial fighter from Africa, that we may be the hope of the world,” Museveni added, describing himself as a third-generation anti-colonial fighter. “The advancement of one nation through technology should not be seen as a threat but as an opportunity for the rest of the world.”

The President noted that Africa and other developing regions must leverage technological progress and fair trade to foster shared global prosperity. He cited the transformation in global steel demand, rising from USD 200 to USD 900 per ton following China’s economic expansion, as an example of how diversified development can benefit all nations.

Museveni also expressed gratitude to the 121 member states for trusting Uganda’s leadership of the Movement, saying the country will continue focusing on promoting trade, investment, tourism, and security as common global interests.
