Man, 50, crashed dead in attempt to syphon fuel from moving tanker

Bugiri, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Bugiri District have launched investigations into a fatal crash in which a 50-year-old man, identified as Kakaire Muniru, was killed while attempting to syphon fuel from a moving fuel tanker along the Iganga–Tororo highway.

The incident occurred at Busowa Town Council on Tuesday afternoon when a Benz fuel tanker registration number KDB 486Q/ZG 5966, travelling from Iganga toward Tororo, knocked down the victim.

Busoga East Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha confirmed the incident, revealing that the deceased approached the moving tanker in an attempt to extract fuel before he was hit and critically injured. He was rushed to a nearby clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that on 14/10/2025 at around 01:00 pm, the motor vehicle in question was heading to Tororo from Iganga side, and upon reaching Busowa the deceased approached it in an attempt to syphon fuel, while it was in motion.”

“According to the eyewitnesses, he was knocked, got injured and he was rushed to a clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” Kasadha said in a Tuesday statement, before cautioning the public against acts of syphoning fuel, citing possible risks of death resulting from the same or possible fire.

Police visited the scene, towed the vehicle to Bugiri Police Station, and transferred the body to Bugiri Main Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

“We want to caution the public to desist from such acts because they are very dangerous. A number of people have died in the similar way, while others are consumed by fires which at times result from incidents of syphoning fuel. It is very unfortunate to lose a life in such a situation, however, the public should remain cautious,” Kasadha warned.
