15-year-old pupil who faked illness to dodge school killed in Kamuli quarry collapse

Kamuli, Uganda: Police in Busoga North Region are investigating a tragic incident in which a 15-year-old pupil of Namasagali Primary School was killed after the walls of an illegal stone quarry collapsed in Kisaikye “A” Zone, Namasagali Subcounty, Kamuli District, on Wednesday morning.

The deceased, identified as Musembya Anthony, reportedly stayed home after telling his mother he was unwell and would not attend school. However, he later joined other children who were engaged in stone quarrying at a nearby site.

According to police, the quarry walls suddenly caved in at around 9:20 a.m., burying the boy under piles of stone debris. Despite desperate rescue attempts by his peers, Musembya was found dead, having suffocated before help could reach him.

Police responded to the scene after the incident was reported to Namasagali Police Station. A joint team of homicide detectives and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) documented the site, examined the body, and recorded statements from eyewitnesses to aid ongoing investigations.

Preliminary findings show that the quarry was operating illegally and lacked any safety measures, posing a significant danger to those working there. Authorities have since warned residents against engaging in risky activities in unregulated quarry sites.

“The community members engaged in such activities are cautioned to desist from working in unsafe environments that pose serious risks to life,” police said in a statement.

Investigations into the incident continue, and police say appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.
