Kiryandongo, Uganda: Residents of Karungu I and Karungu II villages in Kichwabugingo Sub-county have received a UGX 505 million piped water system constructed by The Water Trust in partnership with the Kiryandongo District Local Government, marking a major stride in improving access to clean and safe water in the district.

The newly commissioned system comprises a 40-cubic-metre reservoir tank, six public tap stands, three school taps, three handwashing facilities, one yard tap, an eco-san latrine, a chlorination house, and a pump house. It also features a 3.65km distribution network serving the two villages.

Mr. Ismail Chumbe, the Vice Chairperson LCI of Karungu II, said the piped water system would greatly improve household hygiene and community productivity, commending the Government of Uganda for creating an enabling environment for development partners to support local initiatives.

In his address to residents, Mr. Peter Kaddu, the Executive Director of The Water Trust, appreciated the Karungu community for embracing the partnership, urging them to safeguard the facility and use it responsibly.

“We thank the people of Karungu for partnering with us to bring safe water closer to homes. Please protect this investment and make the best use of it to improve your livelihoods,” Kaddu said.

He further pledged to continue lobbying for additional funding to expand safe water coverage across Kiryandongo District.

Kiryandongo District LC5 Chairperson Ms Aliguma Edith Adyeri encouraged households to utilize the new water system to promote hygiene, warning against the risky habit of fetching water from streams and swamps under the pretext that it “tastes sweeter.”

Kiryandongo Resident District Commissioner Mr. Dan Muganga called on residents to comply with the water board’s user fees policy to ensure sustainability of the project. He said the new system would significantly reduce the time spent walking long distances in search of water, thereby boosting community productivity.

The Water Trust has so far supported Kiryandongo District with a solar-powered piped water system and 25 boreholes in three sub-counties — Kyankende, Kichwabugingo, and Kiryandongo — within the past year.
