Budaka, Uganda: A 35-year-old man, Sisye Paul, was lynched by an angry mob in Naigumya village on Wednesday after being suspected of stealing five cows from a local farmer, an incident that has raised concerns over the prevalence of mob justice in rural communities.
According to police reports, tensions escalated after the reported theft of five cows belonging to Mbula Mbogo on Monday, October 13. Sisye Paul reportedly went to Mbogo’s home to clarify allegations but became the target of the mob.
Local chairperson Wilber Itakali attempted to convene a community meeting to resolve the dispute peacefully. However, the gathering did not take place, and Itakali, on his way to report the matter to police, encountered a large group of Boda Boda riders heading to Naigumya village. By the time police arrived, Sisye Paul had been attacked and killed.
Budaka Central Police Station dispatched a team to secure the scene, collect evidence, and transport the victim’s body to Budaka Health Center IV for a postmortem. A file (CRB 490/2025) has been opened to guide the investigation.
Bukedi North Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Kyempasa Wilfred, condemned the act by locals, saying “Mob justice hinders investigations and is a direct violation of the law.” He urged community members to report crimes to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
