Over 18,000 renewed National IDs set for distribution in Zombo

NIRA Zombo Branch officials sort out renewed National IDs ready for collection at the Paidha Town Council office on October 15, 2025.

Zombo, Uganda: The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) branch in Zombo District has commenced distributing 18,600 renewed National Identity Cards (IDs) received from its headquarters, marking a major milestone in the ongoing nationwide Mass Enrollment and Renewal Exercise for National Identification Numbers (NINs) and National IDs.

Mr. Jimmy Uromcamu, the District Registration Officer for NIRA’s Zombo Branch, confirmed the receipt and readiness of the renewed IDs during a press briefing held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at NIRA’s offices in Paidha Town Council along Ofaka Road.

He applauded citizens who have successfully completed their renewals, first-time registrations, and child NIN enrollments. Among those who have already collected their renewed IDs are prominent figures, including former State Minister for Energy and MP for Okoro County, Eng. Simon D’ujanga, and Zombo District NRM Chairperson Ms. Grace Thorach.

“We have 18,600 National IDs ready for issuance. If you completed your renewal early, please visit our office in Paidha Town Council,” Uromcamu urged.

While no immediate outreach to remote sub-counties is planned, Uromcamu said NIRA will extend services to all corners of the district as the renewed cards cover every sub-county.

Launched in May 2025, the national exercise targets the renewal of 15.8 million expired IDs and registration of 17.2 million new citizens — bringing the total to over 33 million Ugandans expected to be covered.

In Zombo District alone, more than 140,000 residents have so far participated in the exercise, a success attributed to strong mobilization by NIRA officials and local leaders in the district, which has a population exceeding 300,000.

The exercise, scheduled to conclude in early November 2025, aims to ensure that all Ugandans have valid identification to facilitate access to government and financial services.

Uganda’s National Identification Register currently holds biometric and biographic data for 27.7 million citizens, including those whose cards expired recently.

National IDs are issued to citizens aged 16 and above, while all registrants, including children, receive NINs as part of NIRA’s mandate to maintain a credible, secure and up-to-date national register supporting both national security and socio-economic planning.

Zombo Resident District Commissioner Mr Festus Ayikobua, commended residents for their enthusiasm and urged local leaders to continue mobilizing communities before the exercise deadline.
