Munonyo, Kampala: Uganda’s Speke Resort Munyonyo, has once again reaffirmed its position as the country’s premier destination for high-level government meetings, global conferences, and state events, most recently being the 19th Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Coordinating Bureau.

The lakeside resort, a flagship of the Speke Group of Hotels owned by the wealthy Ruparelia Group, under the stewardship of business magnate Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, has over the years become synonymous with presidential summits, regional dialogues, and international conventions, providing an unmatched blend of luxury, security, and logistical efficiency.

A legacy of hosting global leaders

Since its commissioning in the early 2000s, Speke Resort Munyonyo has hosted numerous high-profile gatherings, including the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the 2022 NAM and G77+China planning sessions, the 2024 IGAD Heads of State Summit, and now the 2025 NAM Ministerial Meeting under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s chairmanship.

The resort’s strategic lakeside location, away from city congestion yet within easy reach of Entebbe International Airport, makes it ideal for secure and protocol-driven government engagements. Its state-of-the-art conference halls — particularly the Victoria Ballroom and Speke Convention Centre — are equipped to international standards, offering a seamless experience for delegates.

Designed for diplomacy and comfort

Beyond its technical capabilities, Munyonyo’s lush gardens, lakeside promenades, and signature architectural design give it a distinctive diplomatic atmosphere. The venue has repeatedly been praised for its capacity to host simultaneous plenary sessions, ministerial breakouts, and bilateral meetings, supported by five-star hospitality and advanced ICT infrastructure.

According to officials from Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the choice of Speke Resort Munyonyo for major summits like NAM “reflects confidence in the country’s hospitality and conference infrastructure to meet global standards.”

NAM 2025: a testament to consistency

This week’s 19th NAM Ministerial Meeting brought together delegates from over 120 member states, reaffirming the resort’s reputation as Uganda’s flagship international convention hub. The event also underscored President Museveni’s commitment to positioning Uganda as a leading host nation for global diplomacy in Africa.

The resort’s facilities were commended for their flawless coordination, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security agencies maintaining strict access control while ensuring delegates enjoyed smooth proceedings.

A benchmark for Uganda’s MICE industry

Beyond politics and diplomacy, Speke Resort Munyonyo continues to anchor Uganda’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, contributing significantly to tourism and service industry growth.

Speke’s proven ability to host thousands of delegates while maintaining five-star standards has set the bar for hospitality excellence in East Africa.

With ongoing expansions and upgrades to its convention center, the resort remains the government’s preferred venue for hosting state banquets, international conferences, and key policy dialogues, solidifying Uganda’s standing as a regional hub for global engagement.
