Serere leaders, business community push Emmah Okwii to rejoin 2026 MP Race

Okwii Emmah faces mounting pressure from Serere community to rejoin the 2026 MP race, citing his community-driven projects and commitment to grassroots development.

Serere, Uganda: A growing wave of voices from across Serere County is urging Okwii Emmah, the renowned Sales and Marketing expert, to re-enter the race for Member of Parliament (MP) in the 2026–2031 term, citing his proven record of selfless service and unmatched dedication to the community.

The calls have intensified in recent weeks, with Serere elders, business leaders, diaspora members, and senior NRM officials all rooting for Okwii’s return to the political arena. Many say his leadership and generosity have left a lasting impact on the people of Serere, and that his withdrawal from active politics left a “void that must be filled.”

Okwii, who emerged second out of seven candidates in the recent NRM primaries, is being fronted as the “people’s choice” despite reports of electoral irregularities during the exercise. Several stakeholders insist that “the will of Serere people was not reflected in the final outcome.”

Prior to his political engagement, Okwii personally financed several development projects across the county, including the distribution of medical books to public health centers, rehabilitation of feeder roads, installation of solar streetlights, sponsorship of underprivileged learners, and contributions to funeral expenses for needy families.

“If Okwii could do all this without a political position, how much more can he do when he’s given the chance?” one local business leader said.

Okwii has also been credited for his strategic mobilization skills, having previously played a key role in mobilizing for President Yoweri Museveni’s campaigns in the district. His blend of corporate leadership experience and grassroots influence, supporters argue, makes him a formidable figure for the Serere County MP race.

With a decorated corporate career spanning Celtel (now Airtel), MTN, Smile Telecommunications, SAP International (Germany), and consultancy roles with Britania Riham and Zeepay Ghana, Okwii’s reputation as a results-driven professional is widely acknowledged.

Efforts to reach Okwii for comment were unsuccessful by press time. However, as calls for his political comeback grow louder, residents say they remain hopeful that “Serere’s unfinished business” will find its resolution in 2026.
