Yumbe, Uganda: Police in Yumbe are investigating an incident of mob justice that left one suspected cattle thief dead and another critically injured in Giro Village, on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
According to North West Nile Regional Police spokesperson SP Collins Asea, the attack occurred around 4:00 AM when residents descended on two men who were found inside a suspicious white Toyota Noah (registration number UAP 984G) parked along a roadside.
The vehicle reportedly had only front seats, with the rear section stripped bare, raising suspicion that it was being used to transport stolen livestock.
Although no animals were recovered at the scene, angry locals accused the duo of cattle theft and attacked them before police could arrive.
Police identified the deceased only as Alex, while the second individual, who remains unnamed, was rushed to Yumbe Health Centre IV and later transferred to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.
“The absence of rear seats in the vehicle fueled suspicion among residents, though no evidence of stolen animals was recovered,” said SP Asea. “We have since parked the vehicle at Yumbe Central Police Station and documented the scene as investigations continue” under reference number; Yumbe SDREF: 07/16/10/2025 and CRB: 564/2025.
Police condemned the mob action and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing that such acts often lead to loss of life and obstruction of justice.
SP Asea added authorities are still tracing the relatives of the victims and have called on the public to share any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
