Obongi, Uganda: Residents of Obongi District are set to see the long-awaited arrival of electricity after President Museveni announced that funding from the World Bank has been secured to extend power to the district.

Museveni made the announcement during the NRM campaign rally held Friday, October 17, 2025, at Lionga Booma Grounds, noting that Obongi was previously one of only two districts in Uganda without electricity.

“When I first went to Obongi in 1979, I saw their isolation and understood the challenges. That’s why, when we entered government, we worked to create Obongi District so they could have their own corner. Today, I told them that we already have the funds to bring electricity to Obongi,” Museveni noted in a statement on X shortly after the rally.

Mr Museveni also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the road network and promote local wealth creation initiatives, and called on residents to continue supporting the NRM as the government rolls out development projects aimed at improving livelihoods

“We are also working on the road network so that Obongi will no longer be cut off,” he added. “But beyond infrastructure, I want to see wealth in every home. That’s why the government will buy equipment and dig fish ponds for the people, then hand them over. Fish farming is highly profitable, from one acre, I earn over 100 million shillings. All we need from the people is to support NRM, and we shall do the rest.”

Obongi’s Journey from Isolation to Electrification

Obongi, once a remote and underserved corner of North Western Uganda, has historically struggled with poor infrastructure and limited access to services. The district, carved out of Moyo, was until now one of only two districts without electricity.

With World Bank funding now secured, residents expect not only power but a boost to local businesses, improved education and healthcare facilities, and broader socio-economic development. Government-led initiatives like fish farming and road improvements are set to complement electrification, transforming Obongi into a connected and economically vibrant district.

DailyExpress understands that the Obongi electrification project is currently in the procurement phase, with implementation expected to begin soon.
