Masindi Port Bridge construction begins to boost Bunyoro- Lango trade relations

The future Masindi Port Bridge is under construction along the River Nile, set to replace the ferry.

Masindi, Uganda: The Government of Uganda, with financing from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), has embarked on the construction of a permanent Masindi Port Bridge, a project set to enhance connectivity and trade between Bunyoro and Lango sub-regions.

According to Allan Ssempebwa Kyobe, Communication Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, the bridge will replace the aging ferry and is designed to last over a century.

He emphasized that the project, backed by a religious financial institution, will enable smooth transportation of goods between neighbouring districts, particularly Kiryandongo and Apac.

Spanning over 500 metres, the bridge is expected to provide a reliable and permanent link across the River Nile, significantly improving trading routes and market access for local communities.

One trader at Masindi Port, who preferred to remain anonymous, lauded the government for the initiative. “This project will likely increase income as safer and more reliable movement of goods opens access to wider markets,” he said.

The Ministry confirmed that the procurement process to identify a contractor for civil works is currently underway, with construction expected to transform regional trade once completed.
