Katakwi, Uganda: The Vice President, H.E. Jessica Alupo, on Sunday, October 19, 2025, launched a three-day free medical camp at Katakwi General Hospital, drawing thousands of residents eager to receive specialized healthcare services.

The health outreach attracted more than 10 medical consultants and specialists in fields including dentistry, cancer screening, hepatitis B, hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell management, and public health education. By Sunday evening, over 1,131 patients had already received treatment.

“We cannot sit back while our people suffer from treatable illnesses simply because there is no medicine in public health facilities. Health is a right, not a privilege, and bringing services to the people is the least we can do,” said Alupo, who urged residents to embrace regular medical check-ups to reduce preventable deaths.

Deputy RDC Katakwi, Xavier Vincent Okwi, called on the community to protect the gains made under the NRM government, noting that the party’s manifesto prioritizes infrastructure improvement in roads, hospitals, and schools for better service delivery.

Royal Highness Akalait Juliet Among appealed for urgent action to end teenage pregnancies in Teso Sub-region, citing the rising number of cases involving girls aged between 12 and 14.

LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo hailed the health camp as a vital intervention to relieve communities of disease burdens. “As a district, we’ve worked hard on improving drug distribution and rehabilitating health centres,” he said.

Janet Atino, a resident of Asigei village in Akoboi Sub-county, expressed gratitude for the free treatment, describing the Vice President as a “visionary leader who truly cares about the people’s well-being.”

Dr. Benedicto Watmond, Director of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, said short-term health camps like this play a crucial role in addressing immediate health challenges in underserved communities.
