Kamuli, Uganda: The Kamuli District Electoral Commission on Wednesday nominated 27 parliamentary aspirants for the 2026 general elections across the district’s five constituencies, with independent candidates taking the lead on day one of the exercise.
According to Kayabwe Kenneth, the Kamuli District Returning Officer, the nominations were conducted smoothly with all political parties represented, though independents formed the majority.
“Today was the first day of nominations for Members of Parliament. Kamuli has five constituencies — four directly elected and one for Woman MP. We’ve nominated 27 candidates, including all NRM flag bearers, one from the Common Man’s Party, three from FDC, four from NUP, and a good number of independents,” Kayabwe said.
He noted that the process was peaceful and well-coordinated, attributing this to candidate discipline and effective police management.
“The candidates were orderly, and with the help of police, we managed the crowds smoothly. We can only wait to see what tomorrow brings,” he added.
Among those nominated were John Taira (NRM) for Bugabula North, Mulindwa George, Anita Omond Flavia, Ntende Julius, Akoberwa Asad, Lyavala Joy (NUP), and Adepo Francis (FDC).
For the Woman MP seat, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga (NRM), Naikoba Prossy Kanakutanda, and Nakisige Rita were cleared to contest.
In Buzaaya Constituency, Martin Muzaale Mugabi (NRM) will face off with Ssebidde Amex, Chris Wabwire (NUP), Mpasa Emanuel Ivan, Kibikyo Joel Kadaga, Irene Ataliba, Muzusa Steven, and Kirenda Isabirye Samuel.
Bazanya Matayo (NRM) was nominated for Bugabula South alongside Dhizaala Sanoni, Kirimani Ronald, and Muwanguzi Andrew (NUP).
For Kamuli Municipality, the race features Masitula Namatovu (NRM), Bigirwa Moses (CMP), Tezikuba Joshua Faroq, Kayanga Baroda, Luwano Aziz, and Mugoya Godfrey (NUP).
Kayabwe urged all candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns, emphasizing that the commission remains committed to a transparent electoral process.
