Luwero, Uganda: The reigning Central Youth MP and National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Hon. Kirabo Agnes Nantongo, has officially been nominated by the Electoral Commission to contest for the Luwero District Woman MP seat in the forthcoming 2026 General Elections.
Kirabo was duly confirmed as having met all nomination requirements by Luwero District Returning Officer Sam Agaba Rutemba on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, during the nomination exercise held at the Electoral Commission Hall in Luwero Town Council.
Flanked by parents, siblings, and an energetic crowd of supporters, Kirabo later led a jubilant procession through major parts of Luwero District, covering Katikamu North, Katikamu South, and Bamunanika Constituencies, to celebrate her successful nomination.
“I thank the people of Luwero for the trust they have shown me since the primaries. I am ready to serve with humility, unity, and action to bring back this seat to the NRM,” Kirabo told supporters shortly after her nomination.

Kirabo’s secured victory in the NRM primaries held in July 2025, where she garnered 31,779 votes (51%), narrowly defeating the ruling party’s 2021 flag bearer Cissy Mulondo who polled 28,443 votes (46%). Other contenders, Jackline Suubi and Faridah Nakalawa, received 1,220 (2%) and 896 (1%) votes respectively.
Her win, described by analysts as a “youth-powered upset,” positioned Kirabo as one of the youngest female politicians to carry the NRM flag for a major district woman seat heading into the 2026 elections.
Battle Lines Drawn in Luwero
The race for the district woman MP seat sets up a high-stakes contest between Kirabo and the incumbent Hon. Brenda Nabukenya of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), who was also nominated earlier in the day. Nabukenya, a vocal opposition legislator, is seeking another term in a row.
The ruling NRM party views Luwero as a symbolic battleground, given its historical significance as the “birthplace of the liberation struggle.” Kirabo’s candidacy is expected to rejuvenate the party’s grassroots mobilization in the region.

Local NRM leaders in Luwero have already declared full support for Kirabo, describing her as “the face of a new generation within the Movement.”
“Kirabo represents the energy and commitment we need to win back Luwero. She is young, disciplined, and understands our people’s challenges,” said one Henry Kitende, a party mobilizer in Katikamu South.
The parliamentary elections for the 2026 general elections will take place on 15th January, with the results expected to be announced 48 hours later.
