Kiryandongo, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has mourned the victims of the fatal road crash that claimed over 60 lives along the Kampala–Gulu Highway on Wednesday morning, directing immediate cash assistance to the affected families.

In a condolence statement issued from State House, the President expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced a directive for financial support through the State House Comptroller — UGX 5 million to each bereaved family and UGX 1 million to the injured.

“I have learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, claiming many lives. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a quick recovery,” President Museveni wrote in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

He urged all road users to exercise “utmost caution” to prevent such tragedies, attributing the crash to reckless overtaking and avoidable human error.

“I urge all road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent such tragedies. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” he added.

The President’s message follows an official police report confirming that 63 people died in the midnight crash involving two passenger buses, a lorry, and a Toyota Surf at Kitaleba Village near Asili Farm in Kiryandongo District.

NRM Mourns, Calls for Road Safety Discipline

Meanwhile, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has also expressed sorrow on behalf of the ruling party, describing the incident as “a national tragedy that has robbed Uganda of innocent lives.”

“On behalf of the NRM and on my own behalf, I extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, relatives, and friends of all those who lost their lives. We also convey our sympathies and prayers to those who sustained injuries and are receiving treatment,” Todwong said in his condolence message.

He called for discipline among motorists and renewed commitment to enforcing road safety laws to prevent further loss of life.

The NRM Secretariat joins other leaders and the general public in mourning the victims, with condolences continuing to pour in from across the country.
