Kotido, Karamoja: Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi on Tuesday electrified supporters in Kotido District with sweeping pledges to uplift livelihoods in Karamoja, promising jobs for youth and an increased monthly social grant of UGX 65,000 for elderly citizens, nearly triple the current government allocation.
Addressing a crowd of hundreds at Nakapelimoru Trading Centre and later at the Kotido Municipality roundabout, Mafabi said his administration would prioritize social welfare and local empowerment, particularly ensuring Karamoja’s minerals benefit the people who live on the land.
“Our elders deserve dignity. We will raise their monthly support to 65,000 shillings and ensure our youth have jobs. Karamoja’s minerals must benefit the people of Karamoja,” Mafabi declared amid loud cheers from the crowd.
During his speech, Mafabi expressed gratitude to the people of Kotido for their hospitality and peaceful coexistence. He recalled his earlier support in gazetting land for the Karamojong community in Mbale, describing it as proof of his inclusive leadership record.
“I remember the land I helped gazette for you in Mbale. We must continue to build a Uganda where every community feels seen and supported,” Mafabi said.
While enthusiasm dominated the rally, some supporters in Panyangara voiced frustration over the absence of campaign T-shirts and branded materials, saying it limited their visibility compared to other regions.
“We are ready to support Nandala, but we also want to be seen. Where are our T-shirts?” one supporter asked.
Local FDC mobilizers noted that morale would improve with better logistical support and visibility at future rallies.
Karamoja’s Political Winds
Mafabi’s visit underscores the growing political interest in Karamoja — a region long characterized by underdevelopment and insecurity. His promises of job creation, elder protection, and mineral accountability struck a chord with residents demanding tangible change.
> “We need leaders who understand our struggles and are ready to act. Mafabi’s pledges give us hope,” said a youth leader from Kotido.
As Uganda edges closer to the 2026 general elections, Mafabi’s focus on grassroots engagement and social equity marks a strategic bid to consolidate support in Uganda’s northeast. His message of empowerment and fairness, analysts say, could reshape voter dynamics in Karamoja.
