Bugweri’s Katuntu threatens action against state officers involved in partisan politics

Bugweri, Uganda: Veteran legislator Hon. Abdul Katuntu has cautioned government officials in Bugweri District against engaging in partisan politics, warning that any continued interference in the ongoing electoral process will attract consequences now that he is a duly nominated candidate.

Speaking shortly after his nomination at the Bugweri Electoral Commission offices in Busesa Town on Thursday, Hon. Katuntu, who is contesting as an independent candidate with the “chair” symbol, said he had been observing the conduct of some state officers who have allegedly been using their positions to influence political outcomes in the district.

“There are many government officers who abuse their offices and engage in partisan politics. The law is very clear on what they can do and what they cannot do,” Katuntu said. “I have not taken any step against them because I wasn’t yet a candidate, but now that I am, I seriously advise them to desist from interfering in the political process or they will have a little bit of conflict with us.”

The legislator revealed that his team has gathered video evidence implicating some civil servants who have been openly participating in political mobilization against him. He said such acts undermine democracy and could disrupt peace during the 2026 general elections if left unchecked.

Hon. Katuntu, who has represented Bugweri County for the past 20 years, highlighted his record in service delivery as the foundation of his renewed bid. He pointed to his efforts in expanding electricity coverage, lobbying for seed secondary schools in nearly all subcounties, and improving access to basic services like healthcare and education.

“A number of villages have been lit, and areas like Buyanga, which once had no power, now enjoy over 50% coverage. These are the real needs of our people that give me sleepless nights — ensuring access to services and improving livelihoods,” he added.

The five-term legislator, who began his political career under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) before going independent in 2021, recently made headlines after appearing alongside NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) Hon. Rebecca Kadaga during a government mobilization rally in Bugweri, where he expressed support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s development agenda.

Katuntu emphasized that his campaign will be based on continuity and performance, not political color. “My record speaks for itself. Representation means delivering tangible results, not making noise,” he said.

He will face off with Hajj Sadala Wandera (NRM), Kaziba Grace Buninhu (NUP), Kasango Isma (FDC), Makaire Fredrick, and Nakudo Sefatia in what is expected to be one of the most competitive parliamentary races in Busoga sub-region.
