Kamuli, Uganda: Former Housing Minister Isaac Isanga Musumba and ex-wife Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, a veteran opposition politician Proscovia Night Salam Musumba were among the prominent figures cleared to contest in the 2026 parliamentary elections in Kamuli and Buyende districts, as the nomination exercise entered its second day on Thursday.

The two seasoned politicians, once political allies under the NRM government, are now heading into separate races that could redefine the political map of the Busoga sub-region ahead of next year’s polls.

Salaamu Musumba Returns Under People’s Front for Freedom

In Kamuli, Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, the former Kamuli District Chairperson and long-time opposition figure, was officially nominated to contest for the Bugabula South parliamentary seat under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party.

Musumba was accompanied by Ambassador Wasswa Birigwa, signaling the support of senior figures within Uganda’s opposition. Addressing supporters after her nomination, Musumba said the time had come for Ugandans to choose leaders who can steer the country through a crucial political transition.

“We are heading into the transition, and we must select good leaders who can meaningfully participate in it,” she said. “I am the suitable candidate to represent the people of Bugabula South and ensure that change benefits every Ugandan.”

Musumba, a former FDC vice president and respected voice in national politics, pledged to focus her campaign on inclusive governance, women’s empowerment, and community-driven development.

Isaac Musumba Eyes Comeback in Buzaaya

Meanwhile, her namesake and former husband, Hon. Isaac Isanga Musumba, was also cleared to contest for the Buzaaya County seat after losing the NRM primary elections.

The former minister vowed to continue his legacy of leadership and development, saying his record of service has earned the trust of the people. “Every time I have been elected as MP for Buzaaya, the President has appointed me as a minister,” he said. “That shows the people’s confidence in my leadership. I am ready to continue serving with integrity and experience.”

Musumba’s re-entry into the race sets up a highly competitive contest in Buzaaya, with several new faces expected to challenge his long-held dominance.

16 Nominated in Kamuli, 17 in Buyende

According to Kamuli District Returning Officer, Mr Kayabwe Kenneth, a total of 16 candidates were nominated by close of the exercise on Thursday to contest for the district’s five parliamentary seats.

However, two aspirants from Buzaaya Constituency — Jaberi Nagaya and Joseph Gafaidinda — missed out after arriving late at the nomination center.

In neighbouring Buyende District, Returning Officer Elyawu George William confirmed that 17 candidates were nominated across constituencies, though five missed the deadline. Those who failed to make it include Mwaka Mohammed, Mulooki Awali (NUP), Kitamirike Daniel, all eyeing Budiope East, and Kabanda Moreen, who had sought the Woman MP slot.

The Electoral Commission described the nomination process as peaceful and commended candidates for their cooperation ahead of the official campaign launch in November.
