Two arrested as police bust vehicle parts theft ring in Kampala

The two suspects (L) and the recovered stolen vehicle parts, including side mirrors and headlamps, after an operation along Wampewo and Punjan roads in Kampala.

Kampala, Uganda: Police in Kampala have arrested two notorious suspects in connection with a surge in theft of motor vehicle parts following an intelligence-led operation conducted along Wampewo Avenue, Punjan Road, and the former Electoral Commission stretch.

The operation, carried out by Jinja Road Division Police on October 23 and 24, 2025, followed multiple complaints from motorists over increasing incidents of theft involving side mirrors, baby mirrors, headlamps, grills, and other accessories.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the targeted areas had become hotspots for phone snatching, bag snatching, and thefts from parked vehicles.

“Following several complaints from motorists about theft of motor vehicle parts, our team conducted an intelligence-led operation to curb the vice. Two suspects were arrested and charged with stealing from a motor vehicle,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police revealed that one of the suspects is believed to be a key promoter of the criminal network behind the thefts that have troubled motorists using the busy stretch.

Recovered Vehicle Parts

During the operation, police recovered several stolen motor vehicle parts, including baby mirrors, side mirrors, grills for Toyota Harriers, headlamps, and other accessories. The recoveries were made around Kiseka area, which authorities have long linked to the illegal motor vehicle parts trade.

“The recovered items are being processed as exhibits to support prosecution. The operation is still ongoing and more arrests are expected,” ASP Owoyesigyire added.

Police have urged motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals found tampering with vehicles, especially in parking areas along major roads in the city.
