A collage of Minister Fredrick Ngobi Gume (L), Hon Brenda Namukuta (C) and Hon Bwire Sanon Nadeba (R), all nominated for various parliamentary races in Kaliro District ahead of the 2026 elections.

Kaliro, Uganda: At least 15 candidates were duly nominated last week to contest for various parliamentary seats in Kaliro District, as the political season gains momentum ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The nominations, conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) between October 22 and 23, 2025, saw a mix of incumbents, former ministers, and newcomers declared ready to vie for the three key constituencies in the district: Bulamogi North West, Bulamogi County, and the Kaliro Woman MP seat.

Among the notable names cleared is Hon. Fredrick Ngobi Gume, the Minister of State for Cooperatives, who is contesting for the Bulamogi North West Constituency seat. Gume, a seasoned NRM politician, will face a tough challenge from Hon. Kasajja George Patrick, as both men rally their bases for what observers predict will be a heated race.

The district also saw the nomination of Hon. Bwire Sanon Nadeba, the incumbent MP for Bulamogi County, who is seeking re-election. Bwire faces stiff competition from Mutebi Bernard Mugoya, popularly known as Agro Ben, and two other independent candidates attached to the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

However, NUP’s Nzalambi, who was expected to run for Bulamogi North West, did not turn up for nomination for reasons yet to be explained by the party.

Nine Contest for Kaliro Woman MP Seat

The race for Kaliro District Woman Member of Parliament attracted nine candidates, reflecting a diverse field of contenders across party lines.

Among them is Hon. Namukuta Brenda (NRM), the incumbent, who is expected to face stiff competition from Balibundi Barbra, Namukobe Ruth, Naigaga Harriet, Wako Milly (Independent), Musagala Caroline (JEEMA), Nabaigwa Eve (DP), and two other candidates from FDC and an independent ticket.

Namukuta, who has served since 2021, says her campaign will focus on consolidating education, health, and women empowerment programs, while her opponents accuse her of complacency and neglecting grassroots mobilization.
