Kibuku, Uganda: Police in North Bukedi Region are investigating two separate fatal accidents that occurred on Sunday, October 26, 2025, claiming two lives along the Iganga–Mbale Highway in Kibuku District.
According to police, the incidents, which happened hours apart, underscore the growing need for stricter road safety measures in the region, where reckless riding and speeding continue to cause deadly crashes.
The first accident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. in Kamonkoli Town Council, Budaka District, involving two motorcycles, registration numbers UMA 623EL and UFE 220J, both red Bajaj Boxers.
According to Police Officer No. 45785 Kaluli Patrick, the two riders were travelling from Mbale towards Budaka when the rider of UFE 220J attempted a sudden right turn into a petrol station, causing an oncoming collision with UMA 623EL.
“The impact threw the rider of UMA 623EL onto the tarmac, and he died instantly due to severe head injuries,” Kaluli confirmed.
Preliminary investigations indicate that reckless riding was the main cause of the crash. The deceased rider remains unidentified, and his body was taken to Budaka Health Centre IV for postmortem. Both motorcycles are being held at Budaka Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run at Saala
In a separate incident, police reported a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of Were Augustus, a 53-year-old resident of Bwibere Village, Nampiido Parish, Nabiswa Sub-County. The accident occurred in Saala, along the Iganga–Mbale Highway, just meters from where a previous fatal crash occurred last month.
Eyewitnesses said Augustus was attempting to cross the road when a speeding vehicle struck him and sped away without stopping.
“Augustus was coming from Saala, and as he tried to cross the road, he was hit by a vehicle that never stopped,” said an eyewitness at the scene. He died on the spot, and police have launched a search for the unidentified driver.
The Saala section of the Iganga–Mbale Highway has become a hotspot for fatal crashes.
On September 30, 2025, a Toyota Land Cruiser (UAS 980N) driven by Musisi Eriya veered off the road near Saala Trading Centre, killing two pedestrians, Alutugume Mwesigwa, a three-year-old girl, and Kigenyi Arafat, 37, a resident of Nakisenye Village in Kirika Sub-County.
ASP Kyempasa Wilfred, the Public Relations Officer for Bukedi North Region, confirmed ongoing investigations in both cases.
“We appeal to members of the public to provide any information that may help identify the hit-and-run driver. We are committed to ensuring accountability and promoting road safety in the region,” ASP Kyempasa said.
He urged motorists and cyclists to observe traffic rules, avoid speeding, and maintain vigilance on high-risk stretches such as Saala and Kamonkoli, where multiple crashes have recently occurred.
