Adjumani, Uganda: The Adjumani District Electoral Commission has unveiled its official campaign roadmap for the 2026 General Election, calling on all candidates and supporters to ensure peaceful, law-abiding, and issue-based campaigns.
The announcement followed a campaign harmonization meeting held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Lavic Country Hotel, where candidates, security officials, and Electoral Commission representatives agreed on adjusted campaign schedules and conflict-resolution mechanisms ahead of the highly anticipated polls.
The meeting comes at a critical time for Adjumani, long considered a political “hot spot” due to its history of chaotic campaigns, violent clashes between supporters, and frequent confrontations with security forces during election seasons.
The District Returning Officer, Ms Akoa Christine, emphasized the need for mutual respect among candidates and urged them to discourage acts of violence, bribery, and destruction of campaign materials.
“Adjumani is known for violence, especially the damaging of posters,” Ms. Akoa said. “I advise all candidates to ensure their supporters follow the official campaign schedules and guidelines to avoid collisions.”
She reminded candidates that adherence to the roadmap would not only prevent conflicts but also foster trust between political camps and the Electoral Commission.
Police, Security Agencies Warn Against Processions
ASP Raymond Odong, the Officer in Charge of Adjumani Central Police Station, called for total cooperation with security agencies, cautioning candidates against organizing processions that could disrupt public order.
“If we all follow these guidelines, we shall not have clashes between security and candidates,” Odong said. “I encourage aspirants to guide their supporters so that they do not conflict with the law.”
The Deputy District Internal Security Officer (DISO), Mr. Bosco Obirasa, echoed the warning, noting that security personnel “will not tolerate any form of violence” during the campaign period.
During the same meeting, Hon. Tandrupasi Patrick, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) parliamentary flag bearer, expressed concern that opposition candidates are often restricted from accessing certain campaign venues.
“Many times, opposition candidates are threatened or blocked from accessing venues while our opponents move freely,” Tandrupasi said, accusing local intelligence officers of intimidation. “We ask the Electoral Commission to ensure fairness for all candidates.”
Mr. Kaijuka Richard Arthur, campaign agent of Hon. Ben Anyama, the incumbent LC5 chairperson running as an Independent, praised the Electoral Commission for organizing the harmonization meeting, saying such engagements are vital in preventing political violence.
“Adjumani is called a hot spot because players make it one,” Kaijuka said. “We appreciate the Commission for convening this dialogue. It’s a step toward a fair and peaceful election.”
Campaign Period and Next Steps
According to the Electoral Commission guidelines, official campaigns in Adjumani will run from November 10, 2025, to January 13, 2026.
The district has a total of 12 nominated candidates vying for parliamentary and LC5 positions. Authorities have pledged to enforce strict compliance with the schedule and campaign rules to ensure a smooth electoral process.
