Entebbe, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged to consider recognizing the Indian community as one of Uganda’s tribes, acknowledging their long-standing contribution to the country’s economy and development.

The President made the remarks on Sunday evening while hosting the Indian community in Uganda for Diwali celebrations at State House, Entebbe.

Museveni commended the community for its resilience, entrepreneurship, and investment in Uganda’s industrial and commercial growth, saying their integration into Ugandan society was now deeply rooted both economically and culturally.

“I will consult further and see how we can formally recognize Indians as one of the tribes of Uganda,” President Museveni said, drawing applause from guests attending the colourful event.

He added that the Indian-Ugandan relationship has evolved beyond business, noting that many families of Indian descent have lived in Uganda for generations and now regard the country as home. “You have lived here for decades. Some of you were born here, your children are Ugandans. So, we shall study the matter,” Museveni noted.

The celebration, marked by traditional Diwali lights, music, and cultural dances, symbolized unity and diversity, with the President reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to religious and cultural tolerance.

Several prominent business leaders of Indian descent attended the event, including representatives from the Madhvani Group, Ruparelia Group, and Mehta Group, as well as diplomats from the Indian High Commission in Kampala.

Background

The proposal to recognize Indians as a tribe has been discussed in policy circles for several years. Uganda’s 1995 Constitution currently lists 56 indigenous communities, though several minority groups and diaspora-origin communities have long sought official recognition.

The Indian community has played a pivotal role in Uganda’s economic history — from pre-independence trade and construction to modern investments in banking, education, hospitality, and manufacturing.
