Iganga, Uganda: Leaders of the Musana Community Development Organization (MCDO) and other partner institutions have been challenged to embrace servant leadership, stay rooted in purpose, and work towards collective excellence if they are to meet their organizational goals and sustain impact within communities.

The call was made by Ms Patricia Agarukire Mulumba, a counselor and founder of Perfect Evolvers Limited, during the 9th Musana Leadership Development Program (MLDP) held on Tuesday at Sol-View Hotel in Iganga Town.

Addressing over 80 Musana leaders from Iganga, Kaliro, and Kamuli districts, Ms Agarukire emphasized that strong leadership is built on teamwork, empathy, and the ability to empower others.

“If we need good results, we must work in unity because no one can accomplish all tasks alone,” she said.
“An organization thrives when everyone contributes meaningfully, just like a family where both parents play essential roles.”

She urged leaders to focus on mentorship and empowerment, ensuring that work continuity is guaranteed even in their absence. “True leadership means mentoring others to take on responsibilities. Give people the opportunity to deliver. That is how continuity and growth are achieved,” she added.

Speaking at the same event, Mr Haril Isabirye Kazindra, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of MCDO, said the organization holds such leadership programs to renew the mindset of its leaders and strengthen their ability to serve communities with empathy and purpose.

“If we leaders are better, the whole community will be better,” Kazindra said. “When serving the community, we must put ourselves down and lift others. You can’t develop a community by acting like you know it all; humility and empathy are key.”

He noted that the organization, founded in 2008, has sustained its leadership development culture, holding three training sessions each year to reinforce servant leadership and value-based management among its teams.

Participants Commend Routine Leadership Mentorship

Several leaders praised the continuous leadership training initiative, saying it keeps them aligned with Musana’s mission of transforming communities through education, health, and skill development.

Mr. Mike Nalugodha, one of the organizational heads, said the sessions have helped leaders internalize Musana’s objectives and improve service delivery. “This training strengthens our competence and roots us deeper into Musana’s culture. It helps new members understand our vision and mission clearly,” he said.

Ms. Esther Agwang, Head Teacher of Musana Nursery and Primary School – Kamuli branch, said the program reinforces the need for servant leadership. “A good leader leads by example — visiting learners, engaging patients, and serving directly, not just giving orders,” she said.

The 9th leadership program was held under the theme “Rooted in Purpose, Guided by Servant Leadership, and Driven by Collective Excellence.”

Since its founding, MCDO has expanded from Iganga to Kaliro and Kamuli, and is now targeting Mayuge and Budaka districts with its integrated model that combines education, health services, and vocational training.

The organization has become a model for community-driven development, demonstrating how purpose-driven leadership can transform livelihoods and sustain social impact.
