Kiryandongo, Uganda: Kiryandongo District Local Government has launched a major road rehabilitation project worth Shs1.16 billion, aimed at improving agricultural productivity and easing access to markets for farming communities.
The initiative covers 40.2 kilometers of key agricultural roads, including the 10.2-kilometer Barudugu–Ogengo–Labolongo Road, financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the National Oilseed Project at a cost of Shs871 million, and the 30-kilometer Panyadoli–Kimogora–Kawiti Road, constructed at Shs298 million.
According to the project details, works on the Barudugu–Ogengo–Labolongo stretch included bush clearing, reshaping for proper drainage, full graveling, installation of 31 culverts, and tree planting along the route to enhance environmental sustainability. The Panyadoli–Kimogora–Kawiti road also underwent bush clearing, spot graveling, and the installation of 28 culverts to improve water flow and durability.
Issa Byenkya Hassan, the District Production and Marketing Officer, said the project is designed to open up farming areas and connect producers directly to local and regional markets as well as value addition centers.
“We want farmers to embrace better agronomic practices now that market access has been improved,” Byenkya said. “These roads will ensure produce reaches markets efficiently and in better condition.”
Diima Sub County LCIII Chairperson Owengom Charles lauded the district leadership for prioritizing the Barudugu–Ogengo–Labolongo road, recalling that the route was once impassable.
“There was no proper road here, only a narrow track. Today, we have a real road linking us to markets, and this will transform livelihoods,” Owengom said, urging residents to acquire agricultural tools and expand cultivation.
Kiryandongo Chief Administrative Officer Anselm Kyaligonza advised residents along the rehabilitated roads to seize the opportunity for development and economic transformation. “Work hard, earn more, and improve your homes. Build iron-sheet houses and invest in your future,” Kyaligonza urged.

Deputy RDC Jonathan Akweteireho called for a door-to-door wealth creation campaign to complement the infrastructure investment, reminding locals that the government remains committed to addressing community needs.
“The entire district receives Shs1 billion for roads annually, yet your leaders dedicated Shs871 million to improve this particular road. You should be proud and grateful for this commitment,” Akweteireho said.
The National Oilseed Project, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, operates across 81 districts, supporting efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and livelihoods nationwide.
