Kaberamaido, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged fishermen across Uganda to embrace responsible fishing practices, warning that the capture of immature fish endangers both the environment and long-term income for fishing communities.
Addressing residents during a campaign rally in Kaberamaido District, Museveni emphasized the importance of using proper fishing gear and preserving fish stocks for future generations.
“It is taboo to catch small fish,” Museveni said. “Let them grow and lay eggs several times before you harvest them. If we protect the young fish, we will have enough for the future.”
The President revealed that the government is establishing designated fish ponds across the country to encourage organized and sustainable fishing, particularly as part of efforts to combat illegal fishing on major water bodies.
He further advised young people, especially unemployed university graduates, to embrace fish farming as a profitable and sustainable venture. “If someone has finished university and has no job for two years, they can start fish farming. It brings income and food security,” Museveni stated.

The President also outlined three major achievements of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government: peace and stability, infrastructure development, and wealth creation, which he said have laid the foundation for Uganda’s continued progress.
He highlighted the expansion of road networks, electrification projects, and access to clean water across the Teso subregion, citing the ongoing tarmacking of the Otuke Road and plans to extend it further to Amolatar.
Museveni acknowledged challenges in electricity reliability despite the country generating sufficient power, promising to follow up on causes of interruptions in power supply. “Peace, development, and wealth creation, these are the pillars of our progress,” he said. “Together, we shall continue building Uganda.”
On her part, Maama Janet commended the NRM government for establishing peace and stability over the past decades. “I want to thank God for using the President and the NRM government to build a strong foundation for our nation, Uganda, a foundation that has brought peace and stability to our great homeland,” she said.
She further called on residents to support President Museveni and the NRM team in the forthcoming elections. “I remind you all, vote for the President and the entire NRM team so that Uganda can continue building on this strong inheritance of peace and progress,” Maama Janet urged.
