Kamuli, Uganda: The Police in Busoga North Region are investigating a tragic drowning incident that claimed the life of a 60-year-old man in Namwendwa Town Council, Kamuli District, on Saturday morning.
According to SSP Samson Lubega, the Police Spokesperson for Busoga North Region, the incident occurred on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at about 8:30 a.m. at Nabigaga swamp in Buluya Zone, after a motorcycle carrying three family members plunged into floodwaters.
Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased, identified as Mr. Monday Bapi, a resident of Kagoma Zone, Butagaya Sub-county, was traveling with his son, Mr. Mukanza Tonny, who was riding a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle registration number UEF 671B, and his daughter, who was also on board.
The trio was traveling from Kaliro District en route to Jinja District when the tragedy struck.
“Upon reaching Nabigaga swamp, the road was heavily flooded, obscuring visibility of the culvert. The rider reportedly failed to notice the submerged culvert and accidentally knocked it, causing the motorcycle to plunge into the flowing water,” SSP Lubega said.
Police reports indicate that the deceased became trapped under the motorcycle inside the culvert, while his son was swept through to the opposite side, where he was rescued by good Samaritans and rushed to Namwendwa Health Centre IV for treatment. The daughter escaped unhurt, having disembarked moments before the crash.
SSP Lubega said police have since opened an inquiry file to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while the deceased’s body was retrieved and conveyed to Kamuli General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
He further cautioned motorists and the general public to exercise maximum vigilance during the ongoing rainy season, noting that several low-lying roads and swamp crossings remain flooded and extremely dangerous.
In a safety advisory, Lubega urged all road users to: avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, or culverts, reduce speed near waterlogged or unfamiliar routes, use alternative routes where flooding is visible or reported, maintain vehicles and motorcycles, ensuring functional brakes and headlights, and follow police and local authorities’ guidance on impassable routes.
